This project begins with a '76OIF 750 I picked up for good price? maybe, well anyway i have big plans for this little bike! So far I have a full motor rebuild in progress
- Running barn-find girder from God knows where(but it's gonna look killer)
-Half shelled the primary cover ( i'm going to run the chain semi-dry)
-jockey shift ?
-hardtail stretched frame
PICS ARE IN TRIUMPH PROJECT ALBUM. If you have any comments or tips or money to give.Drop me a line.
And if I run into ya'll on the Jockey Journal my screen name is Jneal(junior member).
The tail light is "mocked up":('30's car glass lens, socialist flag topper!)
Finally got the crank out of the case half, what a BITCH! then I pulled the sludge trap and of course it was caked full of shit. I guess when they "re-built" before they decided not to mess with it. I'm glad I tore it all the way down.
Sweet ass brass footpegs came in today (thanks Fear).
As I progress with the total motor re-build I'm going to cover every step in the blog section, so anyone else will at least have the tiny bit of knowledge that I'll hopefully gain!
Day 30:(really I dont know how long I've been fucking with this!) Lowers are in the finally smooth down, waiting too be polished then knurled on the lathe.
-slowly working the casting marks out of the cases for polishing
Day 32:changed plans on custom tailight(again!) Got the primary cover welded up and began to smooth it out(see new pic in album) I found out that a new set of .040 pistons are in order, because of the crappy bore job .
Man, time change is killin' me! Having the crank magnafluxed and balanced this week. Just got in some new parts from the great white north. Found an aluminum "Socialist" flag pole topper which has become the makings for my tailight(see pic) Only one more week until I get my hands on the frame!!
Got my front 21" off ebay along with a brand new Avon speedmaster! Showed up a few days ago. Been slowly working on the cases, but it's hard to do with all this shitty cold weather! Looking high and low for a mini disc to run on the new wheel?
Finally picked up my frame..time to get rolling! Plan on sandblasting it today and working on getting off the bondo from the neck area. Going to polish up some of the welds and all that good stuff. I will post some progresssive pics! Next mission....decide on a front-end?
March 19th: After spending alot of time grinding on my newly acquired frame, I have come to a conclusion. Whoever modified the neck should be beat to DEATH! I'm glad I found the style not to my liking and decided to clean it up. For one I really had no idea you could weld over body filler!!(not to mention the porosity and stress cracks buried deep within) But I've got plenty of grinding wheels and a welder, so the journey continues.....
March 28th: Ordered a new gas tank since my search for something off the wall and original was wearing on me. Picked up a girder front end from a buddy who had it laying out in the weather at his salvage yard!!! Lucky me (and what are the odds it would be appx. 8"over just like I needed. It needs plenty of work as you will see in the new pics I've added. Frame is still a tedious process of welding and grinding.
March 29th: Got the girder "mocked up" on my frame. Going to machine down the original tree clamps that were on the girder. They are about 1" thick solid steel, they need some weight reduction! New bushings and some re-chroming and it will be good as new.
April 3rd: New gas tank came in(small narrowed mustang) still needs a little TLC. Got my new (old & oily) Santee oil tank seemed to fit pretty good. Mocked up rear wheel today with disc and sprocket. And I find my worse case scenario: ( Time to machine the hub of the rear wheel. We shall see how this turns out. I need about a 1/2" at least?
April 6th: Trying to focus on finishing the frame! I have a bad habit of jumping around on everything, must stay focused....it is nearing completion though. Just split the stock Triumph front fender for use on the rear (need to widen it about 1/2") But back to the frame. Drilled "speed" holes in the boxed gusset on the neck. They need some chamfers and cleaning up, but pretty good so far. Will have to machine a little on the motor mounts to accomodate the 750 cases.
April 16th: Work has been interfering with bike time! Dropped off girder parts at the machine shop(dad's) to get a little TLC. Hopefully soon can get back in gear.
April 19th: My back is fucking killing me! But I finally got the crank re-built today(cleaned, new sludge trap) and plenty of loctite and 33pds of torque. Should keep it running for years to come. Split the stock rear fender for widening. And I'm currently bidding on a NarrowGlide front wheel on Ebay.(going to use the dual disc hub for the rear wheel on the Trumpet! Sounds like a mess, but we shall see.
I haven't posted in awhile (some of us have to work for a livin') Currently have custom spokes ordered too lace up my Triumph hub with Harley 16" loop ($200 fucking dollars for spokes!) Other than that been riding my other bike as much as possible. More later...
