The 58 ironhead was the first one I chopped, just adding a hardtail. Sounds like you have a great background in welding, you are way ahead of me. What do you mean you need a new torch head so not to molt the steel, your talkn over my head

I havent chopped a bike frame yet but Ive been customizing trailer frames and custom building hitches that deal in excess of 18,000 pounds for over ten years,as for keeping it streight this makes me a little nervous but if I build a jig well enough I know I will have success.Plus if I take this thing down to bare bones and dont do somthing really huge to alter it I will have somthing that anyone could throw together and I cant have that I need to make it my own you know? What was the first thing you chopped?
I'm not going to gusett this time though I use them in hitches all the time, this one Im gonna make my cuts high in the orignal downtubes , take my mesurements,weld the top in ,then bend the lower armes close and remove the material needed to accept the bigger single tube for welding purposes then finish bending and weld bottom. Weaking the metal at bend points makes me most nervous will have to get new head for torch so not to molt steel and loose temper. Should work

sounds like a engineering Q. I just watched Extreme 4X4 on TV and they were talking about that (gussetts). They suggested any time 2 pipes intersect at a sharp angle to gussett them but I'm not sure, my buddy Rick Harper did the welding on my goose neck. he has a small shop and can do anything race cars bikes you name it. I have been unable to track down my step by step photos. have you ever chopped a frame before? I was nervous the first time, hopeing I'd get it the right height and STRAIGHT. Later

Im sorry I looked closer at the bike I thought you added a single down tube also and I wanted to see how you tied the bottom together to the frame. Im trying to figure out the best place to bend the two pipes together to tie the frame together to new down tube without having to gusset it.

speaking of the goose neck or the rear engine mount? The goose ncek was simple, two 1/4 inck pieces of plate one 4 inch piece of steel tube and a bottom piece. My budy and I used a magic protractor to line things up.

I'm using a Paugcho Frame as well and Im running a 5.10 rear tire which works out to about a 130 I think, This bike has been known to eat wheel bearings and now the trans. The old owner a good friend of mine did things quickly and I know the spacing is off. I dig your idea with the laser level Im gonna try that. I would also love to see how you did the bottom of the downtube that you installed. Thanks for all your help!

Belt to chain, my frame is a paugcho that I goose necked. Paugcho says the frame will accept a 150 and it did but it was tight. Don't buy a fucking high dollar conversion unless your just loaded with money. I bought the correct sprocket with the number of teeth I wanted and then I bought I dished rear sprocket, you will probably have to bore the whole out larger on the sprocket, since I made the spacing myself I was able to modify everything. I shot it with a lazer level and decided that to make the chain run where I wanted it to I needed to mill some off the inside of the sprocket not much about 3/32. Next I figured out the size of the spacer I needed for the front and milled it in the lathe. This process worked with a 150 tire but any bigger you will probably need an adapter for the front sprocket shaft, you might also have to come up with a lock washer set for the front sprocket for safety. The kit was over 200 dollars, I stayed at a Holiday Inn and it cost me 25 bucks to do my own, backyard builders need to stick together man. I don't care what mag you read everything is high dollar from conversion kits to 150 dollar seat brackets. All the magazines are money machines. Anymore help just ask Chop On later

Thanks a couple of us threw it together 2 years ago and the guy that owned it gave it to me with a bad outputshaft bearing, in trade for a dirt bike. I had an 01 1200 custom motor sitting around so boom.
Its funny you like it cuse now its got a mustang tank like yours on it and Im looking to get red of the boat trailer fender and get one similar to yours. Hey Im looking for a good shim kit for a belt to chain conversion this is why the problem with trans got any ideas? thanks Randal ( I dig the green on your bike)
