To make letters look old, you paint them up all nice first and mess it up afterwards with rags sponges or what ever. Then clean off the paint that gets smudged outside the edge of the letters. A good trick is to not clean the surface as you normally would before applying paint. The some part will automatically be more prone to come off than others. If you work on a messed up paint job that is worn to begin with, you can also sand it a little when it's dry.
