Of course there's Jaco. Jeff Berlin and Jonas Hellborg kick ass. After that there are the standard rock players-Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, John Entwistle. Have you listened closely to Dennis Dunaway (Alice Cooper) or Gary Tallent on Bruce Sprinsteen's OLD, GOOD music. Listen to the bass on Springsteen's first 3 albums. Les Claypool is amazing, but I'm personally not a fan of tapping or slapping. He is incredible at what he does though. I'm not overly impressed with bassists who solo by just turning up the distortion and finger wiggling. Another great player is Rocco Prestia from Toer of Power. I'm not crazy about the group, but listen to the staccato playing and the left hand muting.
I havent heard of some of these players, I will check em out though !!
Alice Cooper has had a few cool bassist over the years..... I like Gary Tallent.

I was watching some cool acoustic footage of Godsmack on you tube and whether you like the band or not, I loved Robbie Merrill's smooth playing style and deep tone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykdg1hOcke0
COOL video .......... I do like Godsmack, Although Robbies bass playing never really jumped out at me ........... I have to agree that he is solid .........
