Probably more an indicator of the economy. Alot of people couldnt afford the luxuries they once could. So alot had to let their bikes go, some probably were repossessed.

Hard to live to ride if you cant make the payments.
buy cash or build it yourself then its yours forever
I reckon a load of these HOG types buy into the image but then realise theres a bit more to it , like getting yer hands dirty and yer hair ruffled !!! :)
They think , blow that and go buy a Honda Goldwing or the latest fad, a BMW GS1200 !
I agree with Count Hami, he's dead right. They do stick all that gold eagle live to ride shite allover them, but some hardly get out., but in a way, you could argue the same about some jap sports bikes. They get them painted in rizla suzuki colours or repsol etc etc, stick the doctor sign on their leathers and only go for a blast after they've watched the moto GP, my house is on one of the main routes to Whitby, and after the GP all you hear is race can after race can. But at the end of the day, its your machine and you do what you like with it. On a lighter note though, i was sat outside the harley dealership in Newcastle waiting for my friend who works there when the local ' wildhogs' pulled up. It was an organised Hog run and it was funny to watch them all. The road captain actually asking everyone if they had filled up, and been to the toilet etc etc, please raise your hands if so' whats next, parental consent, thats surely not what its all about is it?????
yeah my wife always asks me all that shit sarky wench
I never got all this formation riding and leaders and followers and what not. I guess some people just need to belong and some people just need to be in charge. Went for a ride a couple weeks ago with some people from work. During a beer stop (well it was a beer stop for me) one started going on about formations and signals and all that. I told them, I dunno, I just ride. If you wanna stop, stop, if you wanna go, go. If you wanna turn off and chase a wild hair to Alaska, go for it.

I think a lot of people don't feel totally safe when they are riding be it doubting their own ability and experience or not totally understanding how to ride safely around cagers, etc so they find comfort in being in a group with control, etc.

I like to ride with people who either know where they are going, or at least can make a decision at the fork in the road without having to have a meeting.

you lucky sod ,ive been on that road when ive been up there on holiday. all those bends an no traffick, you have to go out on a sunday about 6 o,clock ,am in the south east,to avoid the B&Q lot.!!!!!!!
by the way this was ment for geoff our american cousins wont know what B& Q is.their old people who flock to the d.i.y stores on any sunday(theres a pun there).theirs hundreds of them holding up the traffick doin about 10 m.p.h.they buy stuff they dont realy need cos its cheap.tipicaly british, god bless um.
All the better for us, cheap low mileage Harleys for sale, all you need then is a good supply of cutting disc's f 'ya grinder!
I remember when I first started to ride (many moons ago) I just wanted to RIDE. It didn't matter what brand bike it was so long as it got me out and about. Now what I hear from new wannabe riders is "I want to buy a Harley". They never mention want to ride for the sake of being on the road. It's the image that they want now, with out earning it. When they're boreed or found something new they sell their bikes and move on to something new.
Like you said Jon more used bikes for those who really want them and can't afford brand new ones.
yes i got my first bike 40 years ago wanted an electra glide in blue got a royal enfield 250 in silver lifes a bitch i loved that bike saw easy rider and fitted apes and alloy mudguards and a loud pipe painted it red with flames never not had a bike since brits are the best though
