Do I or don't I hmmmmmmmmm. I welded on a hardtail rear end on a 77 ironhead, with a 530 o-ring chain. The chain just seems long as fuck, any help would be appreciated!!!! You can check out some pics and a video to get a better idea of the chain situation. Thanks R~P

cut the chain .. adjust it so theres no slop , hardtails dont need slack they dont move.
Gotta disagree, Hardtails need only a half inch of slack, run them with No Slack, and you will be buying sprockets and chains on a regular basis...
If you got more than about half inch of slack you are going to need to tension the chain. If you don't have adjusters or a slotted axle plate then yes you are going to need a tensioner. Another reason might be to clear a frame cross bar. You may need to raise the chain . My chain was very close to cross tube. It was OK when adjusted, but the moment it got a tad bit more slack it would ride on the cross tube.

I tried to mount a piece of Teflon on the bar, but still would hear an annoying slap as the tension fell off.

To solve the issue I installed a spring tensioner. It directs the chain up and over the tube and for the most part self adjusts.

Hard to beat that for a Fix..Nice work!
