Permalink Reply by Jerry B on February 10, 2012 at 1:57pm Hello,
I’m proud to present you people my Choprod Shovel after 3 and half years of blood, sweat and tears. Really, really everything is home and handbuild with a minimum of equipment and a lot of spare time. It started with buying the engine, gearbox, wheels, primary drive and springer frontend. Than making a drawing 1:1 followed by building the frame. The oiltank, gastank, rearfender, beltguard and seat are made from Alloy by hand and are polished with no further finish. For the brakes I used 2 rear brake callipers from a RSV Mille. The brake cylinders are placed between the 2 gastanks and under the gearbox. Also the controls, taillight, spacers, axels, sidemount and handlebar are homemade. The exhaust silencers are bare metal and are blackened/blued with troche and finished with gun-oil.
Enough talking, here are 2 pics
If you want to see some more pictures of the build, look at my page (By the way, the Volksrod is from a friend)
Grtz Jerry
1978 Suzuki GS550E a.k.a The Black Dahlia
Completely rebuilt motor all the way down to the gear shift cam
replaced clutch plates
all new seals & gaskets
piston cylinder brushed hone, valve seats all hand lapped, new pistons with all new piston rings
4 Mikuni Carburetors rebuilt and stepped up main jets by 2 filtered with pod filters(what a nightmare!!!)
New ignition coils rewired.
Now to the good stuff:
14" Road 6 Custom ape hanger
2.4 gallon peanut tank and trailer rear fender bobbed. Both rattle can painted, clear coated and buffed by me in my garage at home.
Custom made from scratch stretched 7" swingarm(yeah I said swingarm) married with a monoshock from a Suzuki hayabusa(It's a softtail!)
Front basket of frame where motor sits was custom made to accomodate the shock.
custom made side battery mount, mounted to swingarm and electrical moved under the seat
Although not shown in photos, she does have the ability to add a pillion seat.
Custom made 4 into 2 exhaust with machined regulator tips that are actually used in the oil refinery field. (these were scrapped so they became my exhaust tips)
So it took me near 3 years to complete this build and she is my first build. I named her the Black Dahlia b/c one day while out in the garage frustrated as hell, I just sat thinking and noticed how she kinda reminds me of a brunette. Her tank and rear fender are a bronzemist color. And if any of you know the story of Elizabeth Short (the real black dahlia and who was a brunette) and how she was murdered, then you'll understand the next part. My old '78 Gs had been chopped in half to make that custom rear swingarm and the motor basket area, so there you go, that's how My '78 brunette chopped, but rebuilt, unlike Elizabeth Short, got her name.
Thanks for reading. So many awesome bikes here. Good Luck all.

Over years ‘n’ years I carried a special bike in my mind. After endless hours in my garage this bobba ‘Don Cravallo’ gets finished in 2010. Frame is an original 1949 HD wishbone with 2” extended front tubes. Engine is an 80cui shovelhead with S&S crankcase and a S&S super E carb. 3” extended inline springer front end. Both wheels are 16” with 8” AJP brake systems. The 5 in 4-speed tranny runs perfect with a black coated 2” BDL belt drive kit driven by an electro starter. Stainless black coated exhaust pipes, oil tank, seat and the back fender made by CM. Tank comes off a Sporty and the speedo is by Moto Gadget. Most parts are black powder coated. Old style paintjob made by a professional local studio.
Don Cravallo – respect ‘n’ proud
Gangsta52 – my present bad ass!
Started in October 11 and finished just last weekend with the first test ride at temps around lows -10°C. The bike is built for one on my Gangsta buddies who cames down from a HD softass bike. Frame is an original 1952 HD wishbone. Engine is an original remanufactured 80cui shovelhead with CV carb. 2,5” shortened softail front end. Both wheels are 16” with 11,5” HD brake systems. The 5-speed tranny with kick start added with a 2” Ultima belt drive kit possible started by an electro starter. Stainless black coated exhaust pipes, oil tank, seat and the back fender made by Gangsta Cycles. 3,5 US gal Fat bob tank with an electronic ST speedo. Most parts are black powder coated, no paint job. The pinstripes made by one of our Gangsta buddies.

I built this bike 2008 as my ever wished old style bobber. Frame is an original 1947 straightleg. Engine is a rebuilt 74cui knucklehead with a S&S super E. Inline spinger front end with dual drum brake and in the back a hydraulic drum brake from later models. The fresh made 4-speed ratchet top tranny works fine together with a 1,5” Primo belt drive kit. Exhaust pipes, seat and the back fender made by myself. 3,5 gal fat bob tank is real old with the original dash panel. Most parts are powder coated. Tank, fender paintjob & pinstripes made by a professional custom painter in my home town.
Tell u – this knuckle is real porn style.
78 650 xs. truely a "backyard/garage" build. there have been many times where things were heard falling off while riding and not noticed what it was until days later. no "bolt on' or "weld on" applications. everything was done with what was laying around in the garage, trial and alot of error, and many trips to home depot. example- i bent my rear fender struts over the edge of the flower bed in front of my house. this engine and tranny came out of a junkyard purchased for 25 buck and has been running strong for 7 years now! i know alot of folks are sick of the XS builds, but xs' are absolutely great engines. best of luck to all in this contest. i didn't know which category to post this bike in due to it having a bobber stance, but with the raked neck and extended forks of a chopper. -DVZ

Never had a bike, never ridden one but always wanted to. Went to my roommate's shop to use some of his tools to fix up my jeep. He was there w/ his buddies working on their bikes. After a few beers we got into motorcycle talk. His friend asked me I seemed like the biker type, why didnt I ride. I replied I always wanted to, but they were too expensive. He pointed out that he bought his Honda for $250. I told him that was cool, but I didnt know how to work on bikes. That is when my roommate said just buy the bike, the rest will follow, I'll help you. So I did my research, I bought my bike for $500 and took it to his shop. I was amazed how different it looked once you take off all the cosmetic junk. He taught me how to use a cutting wheel, started me off welding and gave me a few tips. Next thing I know, I was chin deep in motorcycle stuff. Blogs, Forums, E-Bay, Google searches... anything I can find about motorcycle and Fabrication stuff. I rented a garage for $250 a month w/ a restroom (I had no garage where I live and my roommates shop was closed when I got off work. I needed access when I wanted it), this had been the 3rd garage Id moved to since I started the bike. This was starting to be a straight out mission. Anyway, I bought some power tools and stuff of the likes and I bought a welder. I must have watched hours and hours of You Tube. I learned how to weld through You tube. Anyway, it took me 1 year to finish my bike, when when I did, she was a looker. Im very proud of my bike and my accomplishment. It took a lot of will and energy. Now if I could put the same amount of Will and Energy into starting my own business and making money, Id probably be rich!
